A powerful new book, “Together We Rise: Immigrants in America,” by renowned photographer Mark Tuschman, sheds light on one of the most polarizing issues of our times- immigration.

The barrage of anti-immigrant rhetoric over recent years in our country has sown seeds of distrust, contributing to an increasingly polarized America. Consequently, feelings of alienation and resentment toward immigrants have found increasing acceptance.

What can we do to begin healing and create bridges of understanding between people of diverse backgrounds? Mark Tuschman’s answer to this question was to embark on a photographic journey to document the vital contributions that immigrants bring to our country.

Together We Rise: Immigrants in America is more than a beautifully produced photo documentary book. The ultimate goal of Together We Rise is to nurture empathy and compassion, embrace each other with respect and dignity, bringing forth the better angels of our American nature to help us heal and thrive as a country.

The photos and narratives are an eloquent reminder of the creativity, intellect, and essential labor immigrants continue to bring to our unique experiment in freedom and individual liberty – a reminder of how they contribute to our economic prosperity security, and also to our moral standing in the world.

Together We Rise features intimate portraits and personal stories of over 120 immigrants from very diverse backgrounds. Some came seeking asylum. And others came traditionally or were granted DACA status. All of them came to work hard, to better their lives, and to become citizens.

From farmers and farmworkers, chefs and restaurateurs, doctors, lawyers, judges, and high-tech creators and innovators, each immigrant expresses the desire to contribute fully to our society. They have come here because they deeply admire and respect our democratic values and ideals.

Together We Rise underscores the crucial role of empathy and compassion in conversations about immigration, making it essential reading for those interested in understanding the experiences and contributions of immigrants in the United States.

Mark Tuschman is an award-winning photographer with over 40 years of experience. His previous book, Faces of Courage: Intimate Portraits of Women the Edge, was cited as one of the best photography books of 2015.

Driven by his own background as the grandson of immigrants, Tuschman uses his photography as a universal language to create images and stories that will move viewers to respond not only with empathy but also with action. It is his intention to photograph people with compassion and dignity in the hope of communicating our interrelatedness.
